Does the thought of downsizing
your home strike panic in you? You're not alone. More
people are turning to "senior move managers." These
professional organizers, packers and unpackers specialize in
assisting older adults and their families prepare for a move,
particularly in sorting out their emotional and physical
concerns. The industry is growing-- membership in the
National Assoc. of Senior Move Managers has increased from 16
members in 2002 to about 240 today. "The packing and
unpacking are easy," says Margit Novack, owner of Moving
Solutions, a Philadelphia-based company with franchises in six
states. "Helping clients understand their emotions, listening
to their concerns and helping them feel in control takes a lot
more work." Move managers advise clients what
possessions to take and what to give away or sell. They also
can recommend a moving company. Average cost for the full
range of services starts at about $2,000, but companies that
focus only on packing or unpacking charge much less.
